CLEAR SPRING, Md. - Students at Clear Spring Elementary School got a surprise visit from former Baltimore Raven Brad Jackson after winning the Maryland Breakfast Challenge.
“The Maryland Breakfast Challenge is a friendly competition for schools to just do a little bit more and hopefully increase breakfast participation. So, this year, we had close to 150 schools participate, and the grand prize [went to] a school that did the most to help increase breakfast [awareness],” said Nicete Moodie, No Kid Hungry.
In efforts to fight childhood hunger, officials at the elementary school entered the challenge by implementing a new breakfast program that included a grab-and-go classroom model.
“Honestly, I entered the competition, and I completely forgot about it. When I was alerted that we had won, it was just the magic of allowing students to grab-and-go,” said Shari Palm, Principal, The Clear Spring Elementary School.
Shortly after the program was implemented, the amount of students eating breakfast nearly doubled at the school, which made them the statewide winners.
“To put breakfast in these children’s hands, it gives the teachers an advantage to have the attention of the students. They will learn and be more attentive, which is good for everybody,” said Brad Jackson, former Baltimore Raven linebacker.
In addition to the visit, the school was awarded $5,000 for winning the challenge.
